Vent: Busted a snapon socket on a rusty caliper bolt yesterday
I was doing a brake job on a 2010 F150 yesterday afternoon, and that lower caliper bolt was completely seized. Hit it with PB blaster, let it soak for 20 mins, still no luck. Then I put my 1/2 inch impact on it and the socket literally cracked in half. Anyone got a go to method for those stuck bolts without killing tools?

You ever notice how stuff like this always happens at the worst possible time? Like you have a perfect streak of easy jobs and then bam, a bolt that just refuses to cooperate and takes a socket with it. I've been there with my old Tacoma, split a cheap socket on a brake line once and learned the hard way. The heat and wax trick is solid, but I also started pre-soaking bolts a day before with Kroil or a 50/50 mix of acetone and ATF. That stuff travels way better than PB Blaster and gives you a fighting chance without needing the impact to do all the work. It's like with a lot of things in life, a little patience upfront saves you from smashing it and breaking something else.

Oh man, that sucks! My buddy had the same thing happen on his Ram 1500 last month. He tried the heat and candle wax trick where you get the bolt hot and let wax wick into the threads. Said it worked like a charm, and his socket stayed in one piece. Might be worth a shot next time instead of just blasting it with the impact.
