inSaw a job in Denver last week where the homeowner bought carpet from a big box store and it was cut 6 inches short on one edge
I just think the prep work is pretty straightforward if you take your time with it.

inWarning: That old coax cable trick almost took out a whole panel
Done it this way for years" usually means they've been lucky, not good. Bad crimps can absolutely kill a panel if a connector vibrates loose or shorts something during power-up. Tell the new guy to spend the $20 on a good ratcheting crimper, it's cheap insurance for his whole setup.

inUpdate: The harbor master told me to switch to a variable speed cutterhead 6 months ago and I finally tried it last week.
Nah man, I tried it on a couple jobs and went back to fixed speed. Maybe my saws are older but the variable speed felt laggy to me like it was hunting for the right rpm instead of just biting in. I got way better results keeping it pinned and feeding steady. Different strokes I guess.

inBlew $80 on a fancy inspection mirror and regretted it
Dude yes! I dropped like 60 bucks on a fancy telescoping mirror with lights and the clip snapped off on day two. My old cheapo dental pick and mirror combo from Harbor Freight has been going strong for years. Simple stuff just works.

inTIL that flux core vs solid wire debate in MIG welding isn't just opinion
Spent a whole afternoon welding upside down once before realizing the gas hose fell off halfway through.
