Watched a guy at the shop in Tulsa diagnostics-first and I finally stopped guessing
Last week a car came in with a misfire and I was ready to throw plugs and coils at it like always. The lead tech grabbed the scan tool and spent 15 minutes watching live fuel trim data before he touched a single part, and it turned out to be a vacuum leak at the intake gasket. I had been shotgunning parts for 3 years because that's how I was taught, and here this guy found it with a $40 smoke machine and some patience. How many comeback repairs have I created by skipping that step, and how do you guys break the habit when the customer is breathing down your neck for a fast answer?
Man, I feel this in my bones. Shotgunning parts is just gambling with the customer's money and your own time. Best trick I found is to tell the customer straight up, give me 20 minutes to test before I quote you anything, saves us both a headache.
