Changed my mind on extended warranties after the transmission shop on Route 9 gave me the numbers
I used to wave off every extended warranty pitch at the dealer. My take was always that it's a casino and the house wins. Then two weeks ago my brother's 2016 Civic needed a new CVT, and the shop over on Route 9 quoted him $4,800 installed. He had bought the extended plan when he got the car used, and it covered all but a $100 deductible. I sat with him while he went through the paperwork, and the total he had put in over 4 years was around $1,900. So he came out ahead by a lot on one repair. That made me actually read the fine print on my own truck's plan instead of tossing the mailer. Here's the thing though, his plan was the factory one, not some third party robocall outfit. Has anyone here actually filed a claim with a third party company and had it go smooth? I want to know if my one example is just luck or if the dealer backed ones are really that much better.
Factory backed is a totally different animal from the third party stuff you see on TV. The dealer plans are run by the car maker and the shops get paid without a fight, so the repair gets done right. Third party companies will find any excuse to deny you, like saying you missed an oil change by 200 miles or that the broken part was caused by a part they don't cover. I have seen people wait weeks for an inspector to show up while their car sits on the lift. Your brother got lucky because he had the real thing, not because the whole game is fair. Stick with factory or put the money in a savings account.
