My #2 comm radio went dead at 11,500 over eastern Oregon and the squelch breaker was the culprit
Flying a Cessna 182 back from Pendleton on Tuesday, my second comm radio just quit on me around 11,500 feet over the Blue Mountains. I keyed the mic and got nothing, no static, no nothing. I spent about 20 minutes swapping headsets and checking the audio panel before I remembered this plane has a separate breaker for the squelch circuit, and it had popped. Resetting it brought the radio right back, but it popped again 5 minutes later, so I got a ground on the ramp in Baker City and found a chafed wire rubbing the airframe near the antenna. If any of you have chased an intermittent squelch breaker, I would like to hear what the odds are that it is just the wire or if the radio is on its way out.
Check the wire routing near the antenna base first, chafed wire is way more common than a dying radio and it fits your popping breaker. Resetting it brought it back, so the radio itself is probably fine, but a wire rubbing that airframe will keep popping until you fix the chafe and add some standoff or loom.
