Wiring a Garmin G5 into a 172 panel, thought it was a 30 min job, turned into 9 hrs
The CAN bus kept dropping and I chased a bad ground for most of it, turned out to be a pin I crimped on the wrong side of the connector. Anybody got a trick for testing these pins before buttoning the panel back up?
The "pin I crimped on the wrong side of the connector" thing is so easy to do and it bites everybody. Since you already found it, the trick is to test each pin as you go, not after the whole harness is done. Get a cheap DMM and do a pull test on every single pin once it's in the connector, give it a light tug and if it slides back out you crimped the wrong part of the terminal. Then do a continuity check from the back of the connector all the way to the other end before you even think about zip tying anything. That sounds slow but 20 minutes of checking beats 9 hours of chasing a ghost. Also a wiring buddy helps, one person wiggles the harness while the other watches the meter, because half these gremlins only show up when the wire moves.
