Got caught in a surprise snowstorm on the High Sierra Trail last June

We were near Hamilton Lakes and the temperature dropped 40 degrees in a few hours. Had to set up the tent in 50 mph winds and wait it out for two days. Anyone else have a trip completely flipped by unexpected weather?

I mean, 50 mph winds sounds like a lot but that's just mountain weather, right? Maybe you just weren't ready for a normal June storm up there. Two days stuck in a tent is rough but it's not like you were in real danger or anything. Seems like a standard story for that trail if you ask me.

Actually, 50 mph winds can get pretty serious above treeline. That's enough to knock a person over, and it turns rain into needles. Calling it "not real danger" misses how fast hypothermia can set in when you're wet and the temp plummets. Plenty of standard mountain stories turn into rescue calls because folks underestimate conditions.

Always pack extra fuel and a good book for those unexpected tent days.
