Talked to a fence contractor about post depth and now I feel dumb
I was digging post holes for a new fence last weekend and my neighbor's buddy who does fencing for a living stopped by. He said my 24 inch holes for a 6 foot fence were too shallow for our clay soil, he goes 36 inches every time. I always thought the frost line was the only thing that mattered but he explained water pooling and soil shifting can push a shallow post sideways over a few seasons. Has anyone else had a fence lean after a couple years even with concrete around the posts?
