TIL my grandpa's trick of packing fence posts with dry gravel beats my $14 tube of quikrete any day
I used to dump 80lb of quikrete in every post hole around my place in Boise until my grandpa made me try his way last summer, dry gravel tamped in 6 inch lifts with a scrap 2x4, and after 2 winters none of his posts have budged while 3 of my concrete ones are already leaning, so has anyone else ditched the concrete bag for gravel and how deep are you going?
Funny how the cheap old way keeps beating the fancy new way, same thing happened when I switched from store bought compost to just letting leaves rot in a pile. Gravel drains so it never frost heaves, I go 3 feet here in Idaho and tamp every lift hard.
