Deep litter vs weekly cleaning, my coop chose for me
I ran two coops side by side for about 4 months last winter, same breed mix, same feed. One I stripped down every Sunday, the other I let the bedding build up like the deep litter method posts say. The daily clean one got dusty and the hens kept sneezing, plus I was hauling bags of shavings every week at $12 a pop. The deep litter one I just flipped once a month and added a scoop of food-grade DE, and honestly the smell was less and the girls had way fewer frostbitten combs when it hit 9 degrees in Ohio. Has anyone else had winter make the decision for them, or do you stick to your routine no matter the season?

Cold weather might have played a part, but that dusty coop sounds more like an airflow problem than a cleaning schedule one. Deep litter works fine until it doesn't, and a wet spring will make you miss that Sunday strip-down.
