I spent a whole year calling my hen 'Betsy' before I found out she was a rooster

It all clicked last week when my neighbor, who keeps birds too, heard the weird croaking noise she was making. He just laughed and said, 'Reese, that's not a hen trying to lay an egg, that's a young rooster trying to crow.' I guess the barred rock coloring threw me off, and she, well, he, was always quiet. Anyone else have a chicken that totally fooled them for a long time?

It's wild how often we see what we expect to see instead of what's really there, lol.

Yeah, that line about seeing what we expect is so true. I got stuck on a problem for days because I was sure I knew the cause, @gibson.mark. What finally worked was writing down every single step from scratch, like I was explaining it to someone who knew nothing. Forced me to actually look at what was happening, not what I thought should be happening. It's a simple trick but it breaks that expectation loop.

Ever try explaining the problem out loud to an empty room? I do that when I'm stuck on a quote... forces me to hear the gaps in my own logic. Sometimes you just gotta talk it through to spot the thing you're skipping over.
