My $5 rubber bowl beat the $45 galvanized waterer for my 6 hens in July
The fancy metal one grew green slime in 3 days while the cheap rubber bowl just needed a rinse, and now I want to know if anyone else ditched the pricey gear for dollar store stuff that somehow works better.
That line about the green slime in 3 days is so real, I had the same thing happen with a metal waterer I got at a farm store. I read somewhere that sunlight plus warm water makes algae grow way faster in metal because the surface heats up more, and rubber or plastic stays cooler so it takes longer to gunk up. My setup now is just a couple of black rubber tubs I dump and rinse every morning, takes two minutes and the girls drink fine. Pricey gear looks nice on paper but the hens don't care what it cost.
