Light pollution filters are oversold for backyard viewing

Drove out to the dark sky site near Broken Bow last weekend with a friend who swears by his expensive filter. He set it up next to my plain 8-inch dob, and honestly, the difference was barely noticeable. The filter dimmed the stars more than it cleaned up the glow from the town 20 miles away. I think these gadgets work great from a city balcony, but for a typical suburban yard they just eat up light you need. Has anyone else found they got better results just picking a darker corner of their property instead of spending on filters?

Got a buddy who sold his pricey filter after realizing his neighbor's fence blocked more glow than the filter ever did.
