Pro tip: hold your phone screen over the eyepiece if your kids want to see Jupiter
My 8 year old could never find the planet through our scope until I held my phone camera up to the eyepiece at a star party in Tucson last month and just showed him the screen. Now he points out the moons himself, so what are your tricks for getting kids to actually see something up there?
What scope are you working with? I found that a 25mm eyepiece makes a huge difference for little kids because you get a wider view and the planet doesn't zip out of frame every two seconds. We also started with the moon first, since it's big and bright and they can spot craters right away, then moved to Jupiter once they got the hang of looking through the tube. Another thing that helped was putting a stool next to the scope so my kid could rest his elbow on it, cuts way down on the shake. Let them turn the focus knob too, even if they mess it up, because it keeps them involved instead of just waiting their turn.
