Pro tip: red flashlight filter beats phone screen every time

I used my phone's white light for two years and couldn't figure out why my night vision was always shot. Switched to a $6 red filter on my headlamp last month and now I can actually see the Pleiades without waiting 20 minutes for my eyes to adjust again. Anyone else have a different trick for preserving night vision?

Wait, TWO YEARS with a phone screen? That is crazy dedication honestly (like, that's practically a form of self-punishment). I tried it once on a camping trip and my eyes were burning after 10 minutes, so I can't imagine doing that for that long. Red filter is definitely a lifesaver, but I also found that covering one eye while looking at any white light helps me bounce back way faster. Maybe that's just me though, since I have a habit of forgetting to turn my headlamp down before looking at my map.

Oh wow, two years of punishment just for looking at a star chart is some next level dedication to the wrong method. That checks out with what @luna_kim40 said about covering one eye, but I’d probably just end up walking into a tree instead of helping my vision. White light is basically a night vision assassin, no wonder your eyes were begging for a break.
