Star hopping with a paper chart versus the app on my phone, and I'm honestly torn after 2 months
For about 3 years I did everything with a printed planisphere and a red flashlight, and finding M13 in Hercules took me a good 20 minutes of squinting. Back in March I finally got a phone app with a live sky view, and now I'm on target in maybe 30 seconds flat from my driveway in Fort Wayne. But here's my problem: last Friday I realized I couldn't point out Vega without the screen anymore, which bugged me way more than I expected. So I want to know, do you all use the app first and then go back and learn the star hops, or just stick with one way? I'd love to hear how other folks balance the two.
That bit about not pointing out Vega without the screen is the whole thing right there. Use the app to confirm, but learn the hops first or you'll lose the sky. Phone's a backup, not the map.
