My neighbor swore by adding a teaspoon of vinegar to my meringue

She said it would give it more structure, but my lemon meringue pie topping turned out weirdly grainy and weepy after 40 minutes in the oven. Has anyone else had a meringue fail with vinegar, or was it just my technique?

Vinegar in meringue sounds like a prank. Your neighbor probably wanted to see if you'd actually bake a crying pie. Grainy and weepy is exactly what I'd expect from adding salad dressing to dessert.

Wait, did you use white vinegar or apple cider? I've had meringues turn out fine with a tiny bit of the clear stuff, but anything else gets weird fast.
