TIL my credit union's ATM network saved me $12 in fees during a road trip
I was driving through Boise last weekend and needed cash. I usually just hit any ATM, but a local at the gas station told me my credit union is part of some shared network. I checked the app and found a fee-free machine two blocks away. That $12 I didn't lose made me rethink how I pick ATMs entirely. Has anyone else stumbled into a fee saving trick like that?

12 bucks adds up fast. I've noticed lately that most people just grab whatever's convenient and don't stop to check their options. Same thing happens with grocery store brands versus name brands.

My cousin lives in Boise and actually works at one of those credit unions, so I got the inside scoop on this a while back. The shared network is called CO-OP and it covers way more than just ATMs, it also lets you use other credit union branches for basic teller stuff like deposits. The trick most people miss is downloading the branch locator app first, because it updates in real time if a machine goes down or gets removed. That $12 savings is nice but honestly I've saved more on overdraft fees just by sticking to credit unions that waive them through the network. I think a lot of folks don't realize how plugged in these little banks actually are compared to the big chains.
