I was getting hit with $45 fees every time I sent money to a contractor in the Philippines, and after three months of this I looked into using Wise instead of my regular bank. It cut the cost to around $5 per transfer, and the exchange rate was better too. Has anyone else tried switching to a dedicated money transfer app for regular international payments, or do you still stick with your bank?

I run a little landscaping side hustle and needed a business account. My local credit union in Phoenix offered zero fees and a 1.5% interest rate on balances, but their app looked like it was from 2005. The big national bank had a slick mobile app and a branch near my house, but they wanted a $12 monthly fee and a minimum balance of $1,500. I went with the credit union cause I hate monthly fees eating my profit. Now I'm stuck depositing checks through a clunky app that takes 3 days to clear. I bank with a regional branch in Ohio and I always thought the $10 monthly maintenance fee was just how it worked. Then a teller pulled up my account history and asked if I ever set up direct deposit, something I do for my paycheck every month. Showerthought: That time my bank app glitched and showed $0 balance

Standing in line at a coffee shop downtown. Opened my banking app to pay. Balance showed $0.00. Pure panic for about 10 seconds before I refreshed it. Then it showed the correct amount. Called customer service later and they said it was a server refresh issue. Has anyone else had their app freak out like that mid-transaction?

Found out my bank was charging me $12 a month for paper statements

I was looking at my checking account fees last night trying to figure out why my balance seemed low. Turns out I've been paying $12 every single month for paper statements since like 2018. I found it buried in the fine print of a PDF they sent me back when I opened the account. That adds up to over $800 total and I had no clue. I was at a BP on Lake Street in Chicago at 11pm last month trying to get $60 cash. The machine took my card, showed an error, and gave me nothing back. I called my bank right there and they said a pending charge showed up but the machine never finalized. Took 5 days and 3 phone calls to get my money unfrozen. I was thinking back to the 90s when I used to stand in line at my local Chase branch every Friday just to cash my paycheck. Now I just snap a photo of a check on my phone and it's done in 30 seconds.
