A mom brought her 10 year old in yesterday because he tried to even out his side part with kitchen scissors and made a mess down to the scalp. She kept apologizing but honestly the kid was so proud of himself it made me rethink how we talk to younger clients about what we do. How do you guys handle walk-ins when the person clearly tried to DIY something first, do you scold or just fix it?
My own bangs in 7th grade were a tragedy, I went at them with craft scissors and ended up with a forehead that looked like a lawnmower got loose. So when a kid walks in with a DIY cut I just ask what they were going for and we talk it through while I fix it. Scolding them just teaches them to hide it next time, and trust me, they'll find worse ways to hide it. That 10 year old sounds like he had a plan, so I'd hear him out.
