Bought a $5 bread machine at a garage sale and it actually makes decent bread
I was super skeptical when I saw this beat up bread machine sitting on a folding table for $5. The seller said it worked but the paddle was missing which I figured was a lie to get rid of junk. I found a replacement paddle for $8 on Amazon and figured even if it bombs I'm only out $13 total. First loaf came out dense and weird but after tweaking the ratios from a forum I got a solid loaf on my third try. Anyone else had good luck with cheap thrift store appliances or am I just getting lucky?

That's the real test right there - not just getting it to work once but dialing in the recipe. Have you tried swapping out some of the white flour for whole wheat or adding seeds yet? I've had a similar experience with a $10 thrift store food processor that looked like it survived a war, but after sharpening the blade it chops onions better than my neighbor's fancy Cuisinart. Sometimes those older machines are built tougher than the new plastic ones. Were you surprised how much the ratios mattered compared to a standard recipe?
