Dollar store glassware used to actually hold up
I found a set of four juice glasses from the dollar store in a thrift bin for 50 cents. They're from like 2005 and the glass is thick, they survived two drops so far. Now you buy those same glasses and they crack if you look at them wrong. Anyone else notice how dollar store stuff got flimsier over the last 15 years?

yeah the old dollar store stuff was legit built different. i got a set of mugs from the 99 cent store back in like 2007 and theyre still going strong, no chips or anything. meanwhile i grabbed some new glasses from the dollar tree last year and one literally cracked in my hand while i was washing it, just from the water temp changing. the plastic stuff now feels thinner too, like the storage bins bend almost immediately. i think they cut corners on materials or something, just to keep the price a dollar. its wild that my thrifted 50 cent set outlasts brand new stuff that costs more.

Are you sure it's not just that we remember the good stuff and forget the junk? There were plenty of cheap dollar store items back then that fell apart fast too. I got a spatula from the 99 cent store around that time and the handle snapped off within a month. I think we tend to hold onto the things that lasted and forget all the stuff that didn't. Plus, everything from that era just feels more solid because it's had 15 years to prove itself.
