The $2 bread knife that outlasted my fancy set

I picked up a beat up bread knife at a garage sale last Saturday for two bucks. The handle was a little loose and the blade had some rust spots, nothing a little oil and sandpaper couldn't fix. Turns out it's an old Chicago Cutlery from the 70s, probably before they sold out to a bigger company. I spent maybe 20 minutes cleaning it up and now it slices through sourdough like butter. Meanwhile my $100 knife set from the department store has a serrated blade that's already dull after six months. Makes me wonder how much of the stuff we buy new is just junk dressed up in fancy packaging. Has anyone else found an old tool that just flat out works better than the modern version?

Did you tighten up the handle or just leave it wobbly? My grandpa's old hammer is the same way.
