Spent $180 on a wireless meat thermometer that lost signal every time I closed the lid
I picked up a wireless probe setup at a BBQ supply shop in Kansas City back in April and it was useless the second that lid shut on my offset. The base unit choked anytime I walked past 20 feet, so I was babysitting the smoker with zero data and burning $14 pork butts. I ended up returning it and going back to my $25 instant read, which honestly tells me more in 10 seconds than that fancy setup did all day. Save your cash and put it toward wood, the signal tech just is not there yet for stick burners. Anybody found a probe that actually holds a connection through steel and distance, or am I stuck walking out to check every hour?
I bought one of those fancy probes too and felt like a genius for about ten minutes until my brisket laughed at me from inside the closed lid. The tech just can't punch through a steel cook chamber yet, which is why half of us are still out there pacing the driveway like we're waiting on a pizza. Stick with the cheap instant read and spend the rest on a good chair, cause you're gonna be sitting outside anyway.
