A loose headset almost took me out on a group ride in Austin

Was doing a fast descent last Saturday and the front end started wobbling bad, pulled over and the whole stem was wiggling. I check torque on everything else but never re-checked the headset after a few hard rides, any of y'all got a routine for keeping that from loosening up?

Slammed my front wheel into a pothole last spring and the whole cockpit went loose by the time I got home, which was fun because I thought I was having a stroke with all that wobble. These days I just do the ol' grab-the-front-brake-and-rock-the-bike trick before every ride, takes like five seconds and saves me from eating pavement in front of a bunch of retired dentists on carbon bikes. I also put a little paint mark on the stem and top cap so I can see if anything's spun out of place without busting out the torque wrench every single time. Honestly though, my real routine is just panicking whenever the bars feel slightly off and then over-tightening everything like a gorilla, which is probably its own problem.
