Finally figured out why my derailleur adjustments never held

I was always just turning the barrel adjuster until the shifting sounded okay. A guy in the shop pointed out I was missing the initial step of setting the limit screws with the cable completely detached. Did that on a Trek FX 2 yesterday and the difference was night and day. Anyone have a favorite method for getting that initial limit screw position dialed in?

Yeah, exactly what ericnguyen said. I just shift into the smallest cog first, then loosen the cable to set the high limit. Makes the whole process way less frustrating.

Setting the limit screws with no cable is the only way to get a true starting point. I just eyeball the derailleur cage so it lines up straight under the smallest cog. After that, the barrel adjuster actually works like it should.

So you set the limit screws with no cable tension at all?
