I've been lubing chains wrong for like 5 years
Was wiping down a customer's bike last week and the old mechanic watches me apply lube, then just says 'you're drowning it, not lubing it' - turns out I was using way too much and just attracting dirt the whole time. Anyone else have a basic skill they completely botched for years?

Bad tutorials get us all, but here's the thing nobody talks about. The way you learn to lube a chain is totally different if you're riding in wet vs dry climates. I grew up in the Pacific Northwest where everything is constantly damp, and being stingy with lube was a death sentence for chains. Moved to Colorado and realized all my old habits were just making a gritty mess. So yeah, you were doing it wrong, but maybe the technique you learned would've been perfect in a totally different place.
