Tried DIY snow removal vs hiring a plow guy in Buffalo last winter

So I was stubborn and thought I could handle my own driveway with a shovel and a cheap blower I got at a garage sale for $40. First big storm hit in December and it took me 4 hours to clear maybe 50 feet of packed snow, and my back was wrecked for three days. My neighbor finally talked me into splitting a plow service with him for $45 a pop, and now the guy shows up at 6am and clears the whole thing in 10 minutes. Has anyone else wasted a whole winter being too cheap to just pay for the easy option?

What nobody mentions is the plow guy knows the freeze-thaw cycles and saves your driveway base from cracking.

That $40 garage sale blower really let you down, huh? Was it just too weak for the wet lake effect snow, or did it break down mid-storm and leave you stranded? I'm curious how much time you actually saved in the long run by not hiring the service earlier, like did you tally up the hours you spent shoveling vs. the cost?
