TIL a guy at the Asheville forge day nearly lost a finger because he skipped one step before quenching
He pulled a 1084 blade from the forge and went straight into the oil without normalizing first, and the thing cracked and popped hot oil in his face at 2pm last Saturday. Now I do three normalizing cycles and check the blade with a magnet before anything touches the quench tank, so what's your pre-quench routine?
My pre-quench routine used to be "eh, looks about right" until I watched a buddy's blade turn into a banana right in front of me. Now I do the magnet test and two normalizing cycles, mostly because I'm too cheap to buy a new pair of eyebrows. What temp are you running your oil at?
