Had to choose between deluxe and retail editions of Dwellings of Eldervale
I was stuck for like 3 weeks trying to decide which version to get... the deluxe had all the upgraded components but cost $160 versus $80 for the retail. I went with the retail copy and honestly I don't regret it one bit. The cardboard tokens are actually fine and the game plays exactly the same. Plus I used the $80 I saved to grab two smaller games that hit the table way more often. Anyone else skip the blinged out versions and feel good about it?

Man I feel this so hard... "the cardboard tokens are actually fine" is exactly right. I did the same thing with a different game, was torn between the big deluxe box and the regular one. Ended up going with the regular and honestly the only thing I notice is my wallet is happier. All those fancy upgraded bits look great in unboxing videos but once it's on the table you don't even think about them. Plus like you said, that extra cash can get you two or three smaller games that actually get played more than once a year. I think a lot of us get caught up in the FOMO but really the game is the same experience either way.

Nah @emerycarr, I gotta disagree a little. I've got a couple games where the deluxe pieces actually make a difference for me. Like when the metal coins have a nice weight to them, it just feels better in your hand during a game. Cardboard works fine and saves money for sure, but I don't think it's crazy to pay a little extra for something you're gonna look at for hours. Different strokes though, both ways work.
