Honestly, overheard a guy at my local game store say 'I'd rather play a bad game with good friends than a good game alone' and it kinda hit me

Reminds me of how people will sit through a terrible movie just because their friends are laughing at it. The shared experience matters more than the thing itself. I see it at the gym all the time, guys having a terrible workout but having a blast because they're goofing around together. The activity is just the excuse to connect.

Totally get that. Had some of my best nights playing janky board games with the crew, just laughing at the broken rules. The company makes the game.
