Used to learn every rule out loud before game night, now I just wing it
Back in 2018, I would spend a whole evening reading a rulebook cover to cover and then explain it to my empty living room like a crazy person before anyone showed up. Felt like I had to be ready for every edge case or I'd waste everyone's time. These days, I skim the basics and tell my group we'll figure it out as we go. Found out most people actually prefer learning by playing anyway, and it saves me about 45 minutes of prep. Plus it cuts down on that moment where you realize you taught a rule completely wrong halfway through the game. Has anyone else ditched the full teach and just learned with the table?

Nah, I totally disagree. Nothing worse than sitting down for a game and the teacher is flipping through the rulebook every five minutes. It kills the momentum.

Wait, are you talking about a board game night with a designated teacher, or like an actual classroom setting? Because if it's a board game night and someone is "teaching," they should have prepped that game beforehand, not be cracking the rulebook open every five minutes. That's just bad hosting, not a problem with games in general. A good teacher runs through the basics in ten minutes and only checks the book for edge cases. If someone is stopping the game to look up how to set up the board on turn three, that's on them, not on the hobby.
