Dropped $340 on a hydraulic torque wrench for boiler flange work, worth it or did I get took?
I do a lot of manway and handhole flange work on package boilers and got tired of fighting with a cheater bar and a 6 foot snipe, so I bought a used HYTORC on marketplace for $340. It cut my flange time down by about half on a recent shutdown in Gary, but now I'm second guessing if I should've just rented one for the few jobs a year I actually need it. Any of you run your own torque gear or do you just rent per job?
Renting sounds smart until you do the math on a real outage. Half the time the rental place is out of stock when you need it most, or they hit you with a day rate plus cleaning fees plus a deposit hold on your card. You also lose time driving to pick it up and drop it off, and that is time you could be turning wrenches. At $340 you already made your money back on the Gary job alone, so how is that a bad deal? Rental only wins if you truly touch one flange a year and never on short notice. Otherwise owning the tool is just one less thing to worry about when the phone rings.
