inCity tore up my street for a bike lane and I had to fight to keep my shade trees
Saw a story about a Portland crew that cut down like 20 trees for a greenway before anyone noticed. The whole "nobody ran a shade study" thing kills me, that should be step one.

inBlew $80 on a used VCR from a garage sale in Bakersfield just to watch my old Nick at Nite tapes
Bought a similar VCR off a guy in Fresno last year for my buddy who had a box of tapes from when he taped the MTV spring break stuff back in 97. His machine chewed up a tape on day two so he did the same belt swap you did, ordered the kit, watched a YouTube video, and got it running again. He says the commercials are half the fun, like seeing ads for Blockbuster and old cereal brands he forgot about. Something about hearing the tape whir and click makes it feel more real than a digital file ever could.

inSpent $30 on a monthly AI photo enhancer and my old fence pics came out looking like oil paintings
That smearing thing happens because most of these tools are trained on portraits and landscapes, not close up wood grain, so they just guess at what should be there. Your best bet is a tool with a slider for "detail" or "sharpen only" mode that skips the generative step entirely. Upscayl is free and has a setting called "upscale only" that keeps real texture instead of cooking up fake leaves.
