Had to scrap a whole tank patch job last Tuesday because I skipped the preheat step

I was dead set that preheating was just a waste of time on thin material until that crack ran clean across the plate and cost me a full shift to grind it out and start over, so now I always fire up the torch first.

My buddy Jim was the same way, swore preheating on anything under 1/4 inch was just a waste of gas and time. I watched him lose a whole trailer floor repair last fall because he skipped it and the weld popped right at the first frost. That was enough for me. I keep a cheap infrared thermometer in my bag now and always check before I strike an arc.

The weld popped right at the first frost" yeah that'll change your mind fast.
