Hot take: our club's rule about finishing every book is killing the whole point
My neighbor Dana cornered me at her garage sale on Saturday and asked why I skipped the ending of our club's pick for March. I told her I put it down at page 200 because the middle dragged so bad, and she looked at me like I'd kicked her dog. Here's the thing though, our group has 11 people and only 4 of us actually reached the final chapter, but everyone showed up pretending they did. Dana's rule is that you can't come if you didn't finish, which just teaches people to lie or skim. A book should earn your time, not get it automatically because it got picked in a vote. So what do you all do when a pick is a slog, push through anyway or bail and still show up to talk?
