Our book club fell apart over a potato salad scene
Last month at the Franklin Public Library meeting room, we had 11 people show up to discuss a literary fiction pick. The whole thing derailed when someone asked if the potato salad description on page 214 was a metaphor for suburban decay. Another member laughed and said it was just about a bad picnic. Thirty minutes later, three people were nearly shouting about author intent while two others went silent. We never even got to the discussion questions I had printed out. Has anyone else had a single food detail hijack an entire meeting?
