Update: assigning one person to play devil's advocate fixed our club's dead-end talks
Our club out in Tempe kept getting stuck the same way every meeting, everyone agreed with each other in the first ten minutes and then we just sat there. Back in September I started picking one member at random to argue the opposite side of whatever book we read, even if they liked it, and the talks got way better right away. The first time we tried it was on a pretty quiet family drama and the "against" person came in hot with three pages of notes about why the ending didn't work. Now we can't go back, and honestly the person arguing against the book usually has the best points. Does anyone else do something like this, or do you have a better way to keep things from going flat?
