Warning: my old book club fell apart over a 40 page chapter limit; switching to 3 questions per person fixed it
We lost two members in six weeks because our moderator kept letting one guy talk for 20 minutes straight about Moby Dick, so now we cap it at three questions each and have gone 5 straight meets without a fight, has any other group tried a hard rule like that?
Tbh I always rolled my eyes at groups that made a bunch of rules like this, felt like people should just be cool and share the room. Then my own club had a guy who would monologue for fifteen minutes and two quiet folks just stopped showing up, and I finally got it. A limit is not about being mean to the talkers, it is about making space so the rest of us actually get a turn. We started doing one minute per point and it felt weird the first two meets, then it just became normal. Long story short, structure saved the group and I was wrong to knock it before.
