Hot take: you don't need an expensive bone folder

Last month I was at a craft store and saw a bone folder for like $25. I remembered my buddy in Philly who binds on the side swore by using a cheap plastic one from a dollar store instead. I grabbed one for $1.25 and honestly it works fine for folding signatures and creasing paper. It's not as smooth as a real bone folder but honestly for most hobby work it gets the job done. The plastic one got scratched up after a few uses but it still presses down covers just as well. I'm curious if anyone else has tried cheaper tools like this or if I'm just missing something with the real stuff.

Does sanding the plastic one actually make it glide better for long creasing sessions?

Totally agree, that cheap plastic folder smoothed out nice after I hit it with some fine sandpaper too.
