Dropped $40 on a "botany starter kit" from a Facebook ad and the seeds were all dead
I finally hit 50 plants in my apartment last week, which felt like a real milestone after killing so many pothos early on. To celebrate I ordered one of those $40 "botany starter kits" that kept popping up in my feed, and the seller promised 12 rare seed varieties with a 90 percent germ rate. Six weeks later, nothing came up, not one sprout, and when I opened the packs the seeds were cracked and dusty. A guy at my local nursery here in Sacramento looked at them and just laughed, said they were likely years old. I ended up losing the $40 plus another $15 on the seed starting mix I bought just for this. Has anyone actually gotten a decent germination rate from these online kits, or should I just stick to nursery starts from now on?
Read a thing from my state's ag extension office about this. Seed packs sold online have basically no rules, no germ testing required, so old dead stock gets dumped on people who don't know better. They said to check for a lot number and a packed-for date on the back, and if there's none, walk away. Fresher seeds plus a paper towel test before you plant anything saves you the whole $15 mix.
