My friend told me to stop watering my fiddle leaf fig every Tuesday and just check the soil.
I thought a set schedule was key, but after 3 months of following her advice, the plant put out 4 new leaves. How do you decide when to water your big houseplants?

Key to a set schedule"... it's a plant, not a train. They just want a drink when they're thirsty.

My fiddle leaf fig got root rot because I waited for it to look thirsty. That droop is a last gasp, not a first sign. For a lot of houseplants, the soil is dry long before the plant shows it. A schedule stops you from just guessing and overreacting to every little change. It's not about being rigid like a train, it's about checking the soil on the same day each week so you actually notice the pattern.

Tell that to my dead succulents.
