Tried to repot my monstera and the ceramic pot shattered when I set it down on the patio

It was last Sunday afternoon, nothing special, just moving a big 14 inch pot about 6 inches to the left to get more afternoon sun. The thing just cracked right down the middle. Soil and roots everywhere. I ended up having to grab a plastic nursery pot from the garage just to save the plant. Anybody else have a pot fail on them at the worst moment?

Oh gosh, that's just awful. I had a similar thing happen with a big terracotta pot a couple years back. I was watering my peace lily and the bottom just literally fell out of it. Water and mud all over my kitchen floor. Took me a good hour to clean up and repot the poor thing. Some of these ceramic pots just don't hold up well, especially if they get a tiny hairline crack you can't even see. At least you were outside when it happened, that's one small blessing.

Yeah the inside is always the last thing you think about with a pot. I had a ceramic urn that looked fine on the outside but the inside had this weird glaze flaw that kept collecting water between the clay and the glaze. One hot day it just popped like a soda can and dumped a fern all over my deck.

Reminds me of when my mom's old concrete planter just crumbled one morning. Whole thing collapsed under its own weight. @lilycraig you're lucky it was just the bottom, not the whole pot exploding.
