Built a root cellar in my backyard last fall and my neighbors think I'm nuts

I dug a 6x8 pit behind my shed in Worcester and lined it with cinder blocks to store my squash and potatoes without power. My neighbor Karen keeps asking why I don't just use a fridge, but she doesn't get that my electric bill dropped $40 a month since I stopped relying on the basement fridge for storage. Has anyone else dealt with people thinking your off grid ideas are weird?

Totally feel you on this. I built a tiny underground pantry out of an old trash can with a lid in my backyard and my neighbor literally thinks I'm prepping for the apocalypse lol. It keeps my carrots and onions fresh way longer than my fridge ever did and I swear my electric bill dropped like $30 last summer. People just don't get how much you save when you stop running a second fridge full of roots and tubers.

Consider planting a few cold-hardy greens like kale or spinach near that spot, @sarahpatel. Those root veggies will stay good for months when stored properly underground. I've been doing something similar for two years now and my grocery bill dropped way more than I expected.
