Warning: that $90 rain barrel setup leaked 3 gallons onto my basement wall
I bought a cheap 50 gallon rain barrel off FB Marketplace for like $40 and rigged it with a $50 diverter kit from Home Depot in Nashua. First heavy storm last week it overflowed through the top because I forgot to add a overflow hose, and the seal on the spigot was garbage too. Water dripped right down the foundation into my utility room soak spot. Anyone else had way better luck with a specific brand or DIY overflow setup before I try again?

Honestly, I used to think any setup was fine as long as the barrel held water. That was until I had basically the same thing happen, my cheap spigot seal gave out and I got water seeping into the crawlspace. It changed my whole view on it. Now I dont mess around, I put a proper 3/4 inch overflow barb near the top and ran a solid hose 10 feet away from the foundation, that solved the overflow issue completely. For the spigot, i just replaced the cheap plastic one with a brass hose bib and used two layers of plumbers tape on the threads. It's been through a few heavy storms since and not a drop inside, so its worth spending the extra few bucks on those two parts before you put it back up.
