Why does nobody talk about splitting firewood with a tire?
I've been splitting by hand for 3 years up in northern Vermont and my back was done by mid-December every year. A buddy told me to wedge a truck tire around the stump so the rounds stay standing while I swing. It cost $10 at a scrap yard and I split my whole 4-cord pile in 2 afternoons this fall. Has anyone else tried this or do you have a better low-cost setup for keeping pieces upright?

Well I’ll be darned, that tire trick is a real game changer and I wish I had heard about it sooner. I used to fight with wedges and blocks for years until I finally got tired of chasing rounds across the yard. What worked even better for me was cutting the sidewall off one side of the tire so it sits flatter and holds bigger pieces without tipping. I also set mine on a thick slice of log so the axe blade doesn’t hit the gravel or dirt underneath. That combo saved my shoulders and I can split a full cord in a single morning now. The only thing I’d add is to pick a tire that’s just a bit smaller than your biggest rounds, otherwise they wobble around inside it.
