Just realized most guys butter the brick and not the bed joint on a full bed ranch block
Did a 40 foot run of 8 inch block out in Tempe last Friday and watched two guys on the crew slop mortar on the block face and set it dry on the bottom, so half the joints came out hollow when we tapped them. I started buttering the bottom edges first and working the mud into the bed, and the trowel went light in my hands by lunch because the wall was filling solid. How do you all set your first course when the footing is a little off level, do you shim it or just lay a heavier bed?
