Just realized my $9 rice cooker from Goodwill has been saving me $40 a week for 6 months
Back in April I started cooking a big pot of rice and beans on Sunday nights in my tiny Austin apartment and portioning it into 5 containers for lunch. My coworker saw my lunch bag and asked if I was on some meal plan, and I told her it costs me about $1.80 a day total including the beans and frozen veggies. Anyone got a cheap way to make the beans taste less boring by Friday?
I did almost the same thing but with a crockpot of chili every couple weeks. What killed me was the texture by day 4, everything turned to mush. I started keeping the beans a little firm and adding a splash of vinegar right before eating, which sounds weird but it wakes them up. A squeeze of lime and some hot sauce does the same trick if vinegar is too much. My cheap $8 cooker finally died after two years and I honestly felt like I lost a friend.
