My neighbor told me I was throwing away money on trash bags and I got defensive

I was at a cookout in Cincinnati last Saturday and my neighbor Gary said he spends $2 a month on trash bags by buying the thin ones at the dollar store and doubling them up. I argued that they always leak but he said I just need to empty my kitchen trash more often and save $15 a month. Has anyone else tried this or is Gary just a cheap weirdo?

Gary's math is off because he's not counting his own time. Every time you double bag you're spending an extra 45 seconds wrestling with thin plastic that rips if you look at it wrong. Plus those dollar store bags don't have odor control so your trash can starts smelling like rotten eggs after two days even with frequent changes. I tried this for a month and ended up buying Febreze garbage liners anyway just to kill the smell. The real savings come from not having to scrub out your can every week. Gary's probably the type who thinks paper towels are a luxury too.

Oh yeah, the rotten egg smell is the real dealbreaker. Guess Gary hasn't figured out that Febreze isn't just for fancy people who don't like their trash screaming at them.

@ellis.susan hit the nail on the head with the smell thing. Dollar store bags have no odor control at all, so your whole kitchen just smells like garbage even if you take it out every day. I tried Gary's method once and ended up with a sticky mess on my kitchen floor when a hidden banana peel juice leak got through both bags. Gary's heart is in the right place but he's probably the kind of guy who thinks ketchup counts as a vegetable too.
