Rental carpet cleaner or buy the $80 machine, which actually wins after a year?
I rented a Rug Doctor twice at $35 a pop for my 700 sq ft apartment, then bought a used Bissell off Facebook Marketplace for $60, and the machine paid for itself in two cleanings but now I'm stuck storing a clunky thing in my closet, so which is the smarter move for a single renter?

Used to think buying was always wasteful for renters, but you just convinced me otherwise. That storage hassle is real though, and honestly you can flip the Bissell on Marketplace for close to what you paid when you move. For two cleanings a year, renting forever means you keep paying that $35 every single time, so the math only works if you actually plan to move soon.
